How to Choose the Best Solar Attic Fan?

1. Mount Type

As mentioned earlier, there are two main types of mounts: roof-mounted and gable-mounted.

Roof-mounted solar attic fans are installed on the roof itself, typically near the peak of the roof. 

These fans are generally more efficient at removing hot air from the attic, as they are installed at the highest point in the space. 

This allows them to take advantage of the natural convection of hot air rising to the top of the attic. 

Roof-mounted fans are also more discreet, as they are installed on the roof and are not visible from the ground.

However, roof-mounted solar attic fans can be more difficult and expensive to install than gable-mounted fans. 

They require cutting a hole in the roof and installing a flashing around the fan to prevent leaks. This can be a time-consuming process and may require the services of a professional.

But gable-mounted fans are installed on the gable vent, which is the triangular vent located on the side of the attic. 

These fans are generally easier and less expensive to install than roof-mounted fans. They do not require cutting a hole in the roof, and can often be installed using simple hand tools.

However, gable-mounted solar attic fans may not be as effective at removing hot air as roof-mounted fans. 

This is because they are installed on the side of the attic, which is typically lower than the peak of the roof.

As a California resident, I personally prefer roof-mounted solar attic fans as they would be more efficient in lowering attic temperatures and reducing energy consumption in my home.

So, if you have a large attic or live in a hot climate, a roof-mounted solar attic fan may be the best option. 

However, if you have a smaller attic or live in a milder climate, a gable-mounted solar attic fan may be sufficient. 

Ultimately, the choice will depend on your specific needs and budget.

2. Air Flow Capacity & Area Coverage

Understanding area coverage is crucial for selecting the appropriate solar attic fan to ensure optimal ventilation and energy efficiency. 

When choosing a solar attic fan, several factors must be considered, including the size of your attic, the required airflow, roof pitch, and intake ventilation.

First, you need to measure your attic’s size in square feet. 

You can do this by measuring the length and width of your attic and multiplying the two numbers. 

For example, if your attic is 30 feet long and 20 feet wide, the area would be 600 square feet (30 x 20).

Next, calculate the required CFM (cubic feet per minute), which is the measure of airflow volume a fan can move. 

To determine the required CFM for your attic, follow the general rule of 1 CFM per square foot of attic space. 

For instance, a 600-square-foot attic would need a solar attic fan with a 600 CFM rating.

It’s also important to factor in the roof pitch when determining the necessary CFM. 

Attics with steep roof pitches may require a higher CFM rating due to the increased volume of air within the attic. 

You can account for this by multiplying the required CFM by a pitch factor, usually between 1.1 and 1.3, depending on the steepness of the roof.

Proper intake ventilation is essential for maximizing the efficiency of your solar attic fan.

To calculate the required intake ventilation, follow the 1:300 rule. 

For every 300 square feet of attic space, there should be 1 square foot of net free area (NFA) for intake ventilation. 

And if you’re not familiar with the term, net free area (NFA) is part of the vent that is not blocked by anything and allows air to pass through. 

Sometimes, vents have screens or other parts that can block air, so it’s important to look at the NFA rating when choosing vents.

For example, if your attic is 600 square feet, you need 2 square feet of vent space with a clear air path (NFA) for good ventilation. 

This will help your solar attic fan work more efficiently and keep the airflow in your attic balanced.

I actually prefer using an attic fan with an airflow capacity twice or three times my attic’s size requirement. 

This ensures better ventilation and more efficient cooling, ultimately reducing the strain on my air conditioning system and lowering energy costs.

But of course, if you’re on a budget, you only need to focus on meeting the minimum airflow capacity requirements for your attic size.

3. Thermostat and Humidistat

A thermostat and a humidistat work together to regulate the operation of your solar attic fan, helping to protect your home from potential damage caused by extreme temperatures and moisture.

A thermostat is a device that measures and controls temperature. 

In a solar attic fan, the thermostat is responsible for turning the fan on or off based on the attic’s temperature. 

When the temperature reaches a preset threshold (usually between  50-122 °F), the thermostat activates the fan, allowing it to draw hot air out of the attic. 

Once the temperature drops below the threshold, the thermostat turns the fan off, conserving energy.

For example, if you set your solar attic fan’s thermostat to 90°F, the fan will automatically start when the attic temperature reaches 90°F and stop when the temperature drops below 90°F.

However, a humidistat is a device that measures and controls humidity levels. 

In a solar attic fan, the humidistat works in conjunction with the thermostat to regulate the fan’s operation based on the attic’s humidity level. 

When the humidity level reaches a preset threshold (usually between 40% and 60% relative humidity), the humidistat activates the fan to expel moist air from the attic. 

This helps prevent issues such as mold growth, wood rot, and insulation damage.

For example, if you set your solar attic fan’s humidistat to 50% relative humidity, the fan will automatically start when the attic’s humidity reaches 50% and stop when the humidity drops below 50%.

This is why I made sure that all the solar attic fans on my list are equipped with high-quality thermostat and humidistat controls, to provide effective and efficient temperature and humidity regulation in your attic.

4. Material & Quality

The materials and construction of a solar attic fan are essential for ensuring its longevity, durability, and performance. 

So, should look for fans with high-quality blades made of aluminum or stainless steel, as these materials are lightweight, durable, and resistant to rust and corrosion. 

The housing of the fan protects the motor and other components from weather elements and impacts, it should also be made from high-quality material such as aluminum, stainless steel, or high-density polyethylene (HDPE). 

Aluminum and stainless steel are durable, rust-resistant, and ideal for harsh weather conditions while HDPE is lightweight, durable, and resistant to UV rays.

When it comes to motors, you should choose fans with brushless DC motors, which are efficient, durable, and require less maintenance than traditional AC motors. 

Brushless DC motors also provide variable speed control, allowing you to adjust the fan speed based on temperature and humidity levels in the attic.

I have tested every fan on my list to ensure that they meet the highest standards for materials, construction, and performance, so you can go ahead and choose the solar attic fan that best fits your needs.

5. Waterproofing Rate

Like all solar products, solar attic fans must be able to withstand various weather conditions and should be waterproof to avoid damage.

The IP rating measures the level of protection an electronic device has against the ingress of solid and liquid substances. 

The higher the IP rating, the more resistant the fan is to harsh weather conditions, such as heavy rain and high humidity.

The IP rating, which measures the waterproofing capabilities of a solar attic fan, is designated by two figures. 

The first figure indicates the level of protection against solid particles, such as dust and dirt, while the second figure indicates the level of protection against liquid substances, such as water.

Here are some examples of IP ratings and their corresponding levels of protection:

  • IP44: Offers protection against dust and splashing water from any direction
  • IP55: Provides protection against dust and low-pressure water jets from any direction
  • IP65: Offers protection against dust and water projected from a nozzle from any direction
  • IP66: Provides protection against dust and high-pressure water jets from any direction
  • IP67: Offers protection against dust and the effects of immersion in water up to 1 meter deep for up to 30 minutes
